Utility Scam

Please be aware of a scam that has impacted other local utility customers.

To date, no Alagasco customers have reported being affected by this scam.

Scammers are calling utility customers claiming to be utility representatives and informing customers that their service will be disconnected if they don’t pay immediately. They are asking individuals and businesses to buy prepaid cards to pay potentially delinquent bills. The scammers are instructing customers to buy the prepaid cards at retailers such as Wal-Mart, CVS and Walgreens, and then call another number to make a payment with the prepaid card.

Alagasco representatives don’t go to homes or businesses seeking immediate payment and never ask customers to purchase prepaid cards for payment.

To verify the authenticity of an Alagasco employee or an Alagasco third-party collections agent, call 800-292-4008.

If you believe you are a victim of this scam, you can notify local police, the state attorney general’s office, the Better Business Bureau or other agencies. If you believe your Alagasco account has been affected, call 800-292-4008 to speak with a customer service representative.
